Meet the Team
Jean Phipps
Earned her degree in Interior Design from Iowa State University. She has held accreditations with ASID and NCIDQ enhancing her wealth of knowledge and experience during her career. Jean began her interior design career at Robisons Furniture. When it was acquired by McGregors Furniture, Jean made the decision to launch her own firm. Wanting to make it easy for her clients to find her, she started Jean Phipps Interior Design. For the first couple of years, she operated the business out of her home—until early-morning delivery trucks began drawing some raised eyebrows from the neighbors. It was clear the business needed a new home, and she soon opened a dedicated studio at our current location. By 2005, Jean had built a talented team of designers and felt it was time for the name to reflect the collaborative spirit and full-service approach of the studio. That’s when Surroundings Interiors was born. Today, Jean continues to be an integral part of Surroundings Interiors, bringing her signature vision and expertise to every project.
Renee Funderburk
A 2001 graduate of Kirkwood Community College’s Interior Design program, joined the firm that same year—then known as Jean Phipps Interior Design. She began as the showroom manager, where she updated the sample library, assisted customers in the showroom, and gradually built her own client base. This role gave Renee not only extensive product knowledge and familiarity with the firm’s manufacturers, but also valuable experience working directly with customers to understand their needs and preferences. Over time, she transitioned fully into design work, building a reputation for her thoughtful approach, attention to detail, and ability to bring clients’ visions to life. After more than two decades working alongside Jean, Renee was honored with the opportunity to carry the business forward.
Sherri Eagle

Sherri’s diverse background allows her to combine her passion for interiors with a broad knowledge of materials, lighting, and functional design, making her a versatile and valued member of our team.
